at my old school, knee high socks were compulsory. if you wore a skirt you had to have long socks, so its not such a big thing to wear them around town or wherever coz people are used to seeing them. i have knee highs now but i mostly wear my over the knee socks. i wore them all the time at winter with a skirt, black thin leggings or black tights and my long socks and calf high boots. plus a cut tank top and cardigan or sweater. for summer they are nice to wear in the evenings when its a bit chilly but not cold. so you can still wear a skirt or shorts but not get chills. or you could go for knee high baggy leg warmers with ballet pumps, thats a really cute look too.
