Drinking too much Diet Coke?
Okay here's the story. I was walking innocently home from school drinking some Diet Coke I'd bought when some chavvy guy said loudly "Your teeth will go yellow if you drink loads of Coke!" and I just brushed him off because I don't waste my time with chavs. (for anyone who doesn't know what they are, they're loud rude people who most of the general public hate and they go around causing trouble etc.)
But then I got all paranoid and I was getting my little pocket mirror out and checking my teeth and they seemed a bit yellow so I got home I brushed my teeth loads and I thought they STILL looked yellow. But I'm like a Cokeaholic so >_< Does Coke really turn your teeth yellow? I thought that was just drinking tea and smoking and I don't do either.
Help!

I'm not so sure it will turn your teeth yellow... but the artificial sweeteners and preservatives in it are SO bad for you. I still drink it though :P

I'm sure the sugars and coloring (dark brown) of coke will probably harm your teeth. The sugars cause cavities and I'm sure something in there can wear down your enamel which the coloring of the coke might stick to and turn your teeth colors...
coffee and ciggarettes do the same thing~ turn your teeth yellow. I drink coffee everyday and I know it's true. =/ (though coffee is probably much stronger than coke when it comes to yellowing your teeth, cuz coffee can be really strong....)
Soda also is not that healthy cuz of all the calories and artificial sugars and other random ingredients. If you drink it all the time, I'd cut back to like 1 or 2 max a day. It'll probably save your health and your teeth.

Yes, it most certainly can because it has phosphoric acid listed in the ingredients (just like any other soft drink). The phosphoric acid causes tooth rot, stripping the teeth completely of its enamel and with that, resulting in yellow teeth.

that smell is most likely bacteria from his rotted teeth! Just like bacteria that makes stinky armpits! Your dad may have some cavities!

Or it could just be the smell of diet coke! hahah. my aunt's breath is like that too except it's pepsi that she drinks all the time and we lovingly call her "Pepsi Breath". It's more of an old pepsi smell though

Drinking coke MAY cause yellow teeth [staining your teeth!]. MAY is the codeword though... I've never had yellow teeth and my pearlies have always been acceptable white [even before and way after I got my teeth brightened ] but I always drank regular Coke and diet Coke.
WebMD says:
Foods, drinks, poor dental hygiene, disease, medications, genetics, environment and trauma can cause your teeth to become yellow.
As long as you try to keep your teeth healthy by going to the dentist regularly, flossing, and brush at least twice a day, I don't see a problem.
If you're that worried, just don't drink Coke like it's water. :F IT'S HARD! lol, but you can do it.

I like diet pepsi more than coke
But I like original coke more..hehe.
Anyway, I found this quote from ehow.com: "Smoking and drinking soft drinks (such as Coke) can make your teeth yellow. I went to my dentist and he told me that my teeth are very yellow just from drinking soft drinks! I don't even smoke."

You can always try the non-caffinated cokes?

You can try flavored water
found this on "life.familyeducation.com":
In a survey designed to measure the amount of phosphoric acid in twenty different soft drinks, the following were found to contain the highest amounts: Tab, Coke, Diet Coke, caffeine-free Coke, and Mr. Pibb. The formulas may have been changed for the better since this survey was conducted. Read labels. By the way, Pepsi Free, Diet Pepsi Free, Like Cola, 7-Up, and Mountain Dew had no phosphoric acid in them. This, however, does not mean that these products are free from the other problems true of soft drinks.
Phosphoric acid is mainly what causes yellow teeth.

Well, I have read this in one of Yahoo articles:
Both ordinary and Diet Coke will do the following:
-weaken teeth due to the leaching effect of the carbon dioxide fizz on the minerals in the enamel, the acid in the flavouring, and the sweeteners;
-increase likelihood of stomach ulcers and digestion problems;
-encourage caffeine dependency and not give you sufficient liquid intake - any caffeinated drinks you consume should be offset by a glass of water to avoid mild dehydration.
Contains Sweetex, Nutrasweet and Acesculfame K. These sweeteners are all mild neurotoxins, which means that in large quantities in certain people they can affect the brain and nervous system leading to MS- or Parkinson's-like symptoms including tingling, shaking and reduced vision. These effects nearly always diminish when the sweetener is removed from the diet.
Good for me cause I don't drink too much sodas. I'd prefer fruit juices instead.

If you don't want yellow teeth but still want your Diet Coke, just drink with a straw.
But I don't recommend drinking ANY soda drinks. I always drink water. Way better for both hydration AND health.

Because it pretty much depletes you of calcium. That's how it can cause osteoporosis

Diet Coke contains aspartame, which links to alot of negative things. I think Diet Coke is a health hazard, but only if you drink it on a daily basis. Yellow teeth is the least to worry about. Read below.
"Can Diet Coke Kill You?
One of the active ingredients in Diet Coke is aspartame, better known as NutraSweet, which was approved for human consumption by the Food and Drug Administration about 20 years ago, paving the way for the diet soda boom.
In the years since, a number of people have begun to attack NutraSweet, claiming that aspartame can be broken down into three amino acid components, aspartate, phenylalanine, and methanol. All three can be broken down into smaller entities, called metabolites, which can be toxic. For example, methanol, or wood alcohol, can spontaneously become formaldehyde, while phenylalanine can decompose into diketopiperazine, which is a carcinogen.
In fact, conspiracy theorists credit NutraSweet for causing everything from multiple sclerosis to Gulf War syndrome, but say that "aspartame disease" is what hits most people. Symptoms of aspartame disease include headaches and dizziness … and about a billion other things. In February 1994, the Department of Heath released a list of 92 symptoms that occurred when people had an adverse reaction to NutraSweet, one of which was death.
The fine folks at AspartameKills.com are at the forefront of this expose. While their Website explains the horrors of aspartame in greater detail, their essential view is that Donald Rumsfeld and the NutraSweet people ignored the potential health risks to push approval of their wondrous sweetener. While some of what's on AspartameKills.com is notable and perhaps convincing, their tendency to dismiss government officials as Nazis makes them difficult to trust.
Now, according to a study by the NutraSweet folks, "the safety of aspartame and its metabolic constituents was established through extensive toxicology studies in laboratory animals, using much greater doses than people could possibly consume." Of course, as the tobacco industry has shown us, corporations with billion dollar products have trouble accepting that their products may be unhealthy. Can't trust NutraSweet either.
Some independent studies appear to show that aspartame is safe, though. The fine folks at the University of Minnesota's school of public health studied the effects of long-term, hard-core aspartame use in 108 volunteers. In the study, every day for 24 weeks, half of the subjects were given a placebo and the other half were given the same amount of aspartame found in 10 liters of Diet Coke. The Minnesotan researchers discovered no differences between the two groups.
Then again, a story from Oxygen magazine on the dangers of aspartame poisoning says that 90% of the independent studies conclude that it's dangerous. Conspiracy theorists note that the National Soft Drink Association initially opposed the approval of aspartame and say the government won't listen to their concerns.
All of this begs the question: Is it safe to be addicted to Diet Coke?
We have no idea. All we know is it tastes great with heroin."
