I really want to, but.. D:
Anybody ever been to Vietnam? @__@
Specifically, Saigon?
My mommy wants to take me this summer, and it's been my dream to go, but I'm hesitant cause I'm afraid my relatives over there may ridicule me for not being able to speak Vietnamese as well as them. XD; Nothing is worse than Asian relative ridicule.. Yuck.
._. I'm also not sure if I'm patient enough for the plane ride... Oighh.

I've been there. that place is crazy at night.
I think it would be fine. You should go b/c the tickets is really expensive in the summer. Your relative just wants to see you, in fact I think you'll be more respected because you speak English.

You should definitely go! You will regret it later if you miss this chance. Plane rides are awesome. Its one of my favorite parts of traveling.

I've never been in Vietnam, but since you've always wanted to be there, you should *definitely* go. And about your relatives~ they'll be happy to see you so don't worry. It's okay if you stumble; I've been in that position. I go back every year to Taiwan and I feel inept speaking Mandarin b/c my siblings speak more fluently, and my cousins are of course, natives. It gets frustrating when I don't know how to express myself well enough, but I think it's only because I'm not used to speaking. At home I speak both English + Mandarin and don't care that much. Of course in the actual asian country, you would be more conscious of your mistakes; but if you're still mulling over that, you could practice speaking and sing along songs (lol I am a total fob). Then the rest, just go with the flow. =) And the plane ride is bearable ( I get dizzy and don't eat that much-- but heck, I still look fwd going there everyy summer).

DEFF DEFF DEFF GO.
I'm going next summer with my Vietnamese friend, Anh, and she says it's a blast.
Saigon, or Ho Chi Minh City, isn't that the capitol? It's quite large, and the only down side she told me about (and she's so pessimistic XD) is the crazy drivers. Everything else sounds fantastic. Karaoke at night, shopping during the day, apparently they love foreigners, and a water park! ^^
Have fun if you do go, which you should!

Have your relative show you around. I bet they know a lot of great little shops that you'll never find on a tour guide. I think they have malls, too. You should go everywhere at all time don't stay home except go back for family dinner and get together that's meaningful. Oo be careful with the traffic they won't stop even if you're on a bike or something. I think you should buy shoes, purses, or jewelry and accessories. It really hard to find a great shirt that won't be destroy, shrink, or comes apart when you wash it in the washer machine.

hehe I've been to Vietnam...and yes to Saigon too...Idk vietnamese either because my family is Cantonese (but can speak viet as well) so nobody laughed at me or nething...I would have the say that eating and shopping there is awesome because its just so friggin cheap...U can buy a shirt for like less than a dollar haha..(well when I went it was like that)...I also get my hair dyed for like 5 bucks...and hair cut for like 2 bucks...and they're reallly good too!
I'm not sure how it is there now..I havent been back for like 6 years...But back then there was a trend of heroine addicts everywhere...so if u go.. try not to step in grass cause U might find needles...yup thats about it..

I agree, dont worry! Your relatives will probably be happy just to see you. I've been to Vietnam a few times with my family, and they've all been positive experiences. im fluent in vietnamese so i've never encountered the same anxieties you have, but i think you should be fine. anyways, the only thing my relatives really noticed about me was how tall i was! im only 5"5-5"6, but i felt like godzilla standing next to everyone. (LOL) just enjoy your trip and make the best of it, and pack lots of light clothing. Vietnam is deathly humid during the summer.
