Interesting, I just learned how to say cute in mandarin! It's pretty similar to japanese.
Japanese:
可愛い
kawaii
(cute)
The japanese did borrow language from the chinese, so it's not totally odd.

I studied Mandarin for like... 5 years and I didn't learn much. It's so dumb learning a language when the teacher only speaks that language you're currently trying to learn. XD
Ummm, all I see is either Madarin or Cantonese. What about Szechuan? : P

Yes that is right =D written it is : 大家好嗎﹖
大家好﹐我是張婕華~
da jia hao, wo shi zhang jie hua~
Hello everyone, I am Sarah ;D
and rochelle, the Japanese did borrow from Chinese. I think the most cool resemblances are:
電話
dian hua [chinese]
den wa [japanese]
telephone
and
圖書館
tu shu guan [chinese]
to sho kan [japanese]
Bibliotech
Of course, they are the same for both languages in terms of the characters.

It is strange isn't it. However, it's not so much that it bothers me, but sometimes I get angry when people refer to the chinese characters as "Kanji" which isn't necessarily wrong, but it irks me a lot. [though I do realize some 'kanji', the Japanese have made up and do not exist in Chinese]

Lol. It only bugs me when people go, "Oh? You're Chinese? *Mistakenly thought you were Japanese* Sorry, but I'm not interested in Chinese things. Only Japanese." *walks away*
And wow, the chinese and Japanese resemblance are very resemblal-y.. haha.
Do you know how to say pre-school in Japanese? I was watching Aishiteruze baby and it sounded awfully like the cantonese word for pre-school. I was like "what?! Did I just hear her speak some chinese?!"

^about the Japanese - Cantonese thing..
I'm going to try to make this as least unoffensive as possible, because this kinda touches on some racial issues with the Chinese Han population and Mandarin and such...
There are some words in Cantonese that closely resemble Japanese words, such as the word for "Yes" is "Hai" in both Cantonese AND Japanese...I can't think of any else right now...but some people believe that the Japanese originally migrated from Southern China, and that's why they're so similar.
Or perhaps the Japanese migrated from the Korean peninsula. Or maybe the Okinawans migrated from Southern China and Taiwan.
I could really branch off into many different beliefs and arguements here. But I won't. So there.

hmm, im sorry its very hard to help u.
u have to tell me which type of resturant u go to.
as in , traditional or modern or just coffee shop?
because there is too many variety already.
im not very sure also, its quite complicated.
cos there is different pictching in each word, if u pronounce the pitch wrongly, nobody can understand u, or maybe worst, u may get into trouble.
