Re: Have you ever been called wannabe Asian?
I want to take away what I previously said about never thinking a white guy was hott, because Michael Seater from the Canadian disney show "Life With Derek" has some weird appeal to me. Maybe because his teeth are so nice and white? I don't know.

Re: Have you ever been called wannabe Asian?
-.- Today at school.. A Caucasian [White] girl; had a haircut yesterday and today when she came to school everyone called her a wannabe asian and telling her to stop trying to be so asian because she's not.
=[ I was a bit ticked off because I think she looked cute and even if it's a really asiany haircut doesn't give you the right to say that she shouldn't try to be so asiany. But on the other hand, I think people should just stick to their own race ....

I can actually relate to that girl. When I cut my hair shorter and dyed it black(even though i asked for just dark brown, it turned out very black), people in my classes said I looked asian. It sounded, by the way they said it, that it was meant to be a compliment, but nonetheless they said it was an asian-y haircut. But I was thinking it was more like the early american girl haircut, kind of similar to the 20s girls. My boyfriend really likes short hair and i thought it'd be cute. I wasn't trying to get an asian haircut so it kinda made me feel weird that people kept saying i looked asian because I still look very much white XP
I can understand if I put my hair up in a jrock-ish haircut, because that's very distinctively asian. But almost all other haircuts are completely neutral when it comes to race.. and what about the asian people who like to put corn rows in their hair or grow afros? Nobody ever gives them a hard time, and rightfully so, but people always give other certain races a hard time

Re: Have you ever been called wannabe Asian?
no I haven't been called asian wannabe but I have been called white washed D:< I hate it.
BTW most of the "asian" stuff (hairstyle/fashion/etc) have been around in the west since the I don't know lol since forever. look at the mullet cuts that asian girls have... they had that in the 80's O_O'' lol

That's great but I don't care, it's not Japanese. I wish I was born Japanese." And go on to speak one or two Japanese phrases they learned from anime ("it's so sugoi and kawaiiii desu!!!")
I have watched anime before, and played video games sure, but it really bugs me how they don't acknowledge the merits of any other Asian country. I'm not saying having an interest in Asian things makes you an Asian wannabe, but the "Japanophiles" honestly get on my nerves :/

That is so true. I have met Asian people who have said that people only want to be their friends because they're Asian, and then when they find out they aren't Japanese but Chinese, Korean, etc. they stop talking to them. People feel unhappy they aren't Japanese. I think that is just plain rude.
I have never been called an Asian wannabe. Most people know I read Japanese fashion magazines but that is about it. I don't think they would accuse me of being an Asian wannabe because when most people see the magazines, they are in awe at how cute the clothing is. A lot of people find them interesting. I also listen to Asian music but most people don't know that. If they did I'm not sure if I would be called an Asian wannabe or not. Aside from in music and fashion, I don't really have any Asian favorites like shows, etc..
I also don't understand how you are an Asian wannabe when you are Asian, even if it is half. There is nothing wrong with wanting to learn about a culture. I just think those people who tell you that are very ignorant.

Re: Have you ever been called wannabe Asian?
I've never been called a wannabe Asian but I do know a girl who has. I don't think it's fair to call someone that when they just take a general interest in the culture (ie. fashion, customs, movies etc.) but if they started talking with an accent or something then yeah, I would say they're that

Re: Have you ever been called wannabe Asian?
It's all a bit crap really.
Brace yourselves, this is gonna be long
So I'm half black and half white. It annoys me enough that I get classed as black when I'm NOT, I'm MIXED RACE. If one person wants to call me black, someone else might as well call me white. Wtf. Mixed race. Deal with it.
Because of that, I've always been fascinated with black and white culture not because of what it is, but because of how it works.
Ie, people think of me as black. Therefore, I must like hip hop and fried chicken and only want to date black guys. I get approached in the street all the time by black guys. Stereotypical rapper types. But I'm not interested in black culture. Not to say I wouldn't date a black guy, but really, if there was a black guy who wasn't so stereotypical, he's probably gonna steer away from me too, because he's probably trying to get away from that image as well. He'd probably rather date a girl of a different race.
It annoys me that sometimes my 50% black heritage is too much to fully fit into white community... and I live in one of the most multicultural places in England so I can't imagine what it's like elsewhere. I don't find it offensive as such but just annoying because peolpe always assume that I want to date a black guy so guys of otehr races dont approach me and I miss out cause I'm too shy to make the first move. It's like, man, do I look like I give a shit about race? My friends are from all backgrounds. Sheesh.
Similarly, if you're white and imitating black culture, people are like 'that's wrong etc etc' but I mean, why can't you? Just because you're born into one race doesn't mean you can't like the cultures of another one.
So to bring it back to the wannabe Asian subject...
Yes I've been called that. But to be honest, I dno't think it's very fair. I think it's stupid when people think they ARE Japanese or they think they can speak Japanese (cause as has been said, it's nearly always Japan) or they think Japanese people are superior to everyone else or something. But I don't see what's wrong with someone dressing in Asian fashions or watching animes or whatever.
I like Asian fashion... especially Korean and Japanese. I want to go to Japan with a group of friends for a year next September, so I'm learning Japanese. i like to watch animes. Occasionally I slip out a 'ne?' ot something, but I also speak random bits of French in conversation. I'm just a worldly person. I'm obsessed with French stuff as well and I sometimes write pages of French in my notepads just because I like it and I can. If I was at that level with my Japanese I woudld o that too... but by no means do I think I'm French/Japanese/Korean/Spanish/Brazilian/Australian/Italian/whatever other countries I'm interested in.
Although I actually am Italian My grandmother was Italian.
But yeah. Long story short: I think the whole thing just needs to be relaxed. In my opinion it kinda borders on racist... and I think it's stupid how it's un-PC for a white person to say that an Asian/black/other non-white can't be like your average white person, but then you're only allowed to be Asian if you actually are Asian, if you get what I mean?

Re: Have you ever been called wannabe Asian?
ALL THE TIME. When I wore my lolita outfit to school, they actually called me a Japanese Hooker.
Anyways, People are always asking me like 'Do you want to be asian?' and such. it's rather annoying, but I deal with it.
One time, one of my mothers friends was like 'Do you have a Japanese boyfriend?' And I was like.. O.O And said no. Then he said 'Do you want a Japanese boyfriend?' So i gave him a short explanation about my not being racist, and ran off to bed. It made me really uncomfortable. but now, we all laugh about it.

Voted option 3
Don't take offense just say, "Yes, and that makes me more culturally diverse than you are" and then turn around and walk away...

Re: Have you ever been called wannabe Asian?
I got called it by my sister once... around the time i found out about Japanese fashion. Its ridiculous and it makes you feel pretty dumb to because you no your not trying to be Asian you just really love there street fashion etc.
But the fact i had a friend who did constantly act as if she was Japanese and would constantly rant on about how amazing they are, didn't help much.

Exactly, just because you like the culture doesn't give people the right to be insulting about it =\

I do think that most asians are being pushed to work hard at school by their parents...
I guess that's what started the stereotype of smart asians??
and I agree with you who say it's not fair when people say you're a wannabe asian.
They don't know why you like asian culture etc....
and it's like they're giving you this 'negative' label and and... AHHH XD
