Stereotypes.
I was just curious as to how many people have had to deal with Stereotypes about their race or country of origin.
I'm asking this because I'm Canadian and I've been asked many a time to say "Eh" if I go to a different country. I get really annoyed and sort of offended when people aske me to do this.
So I'd just like to know who else has had to deal with stereotypes and how you dealt with them.

Haha, having the stereotype to say "eh" isnt so bad, really. Just a minor annoyance. Southpark isnt helping either.
I've been asked several times by people whether I'm "Chinese or Japanese" or if I "eat dogs" or even a "Are you related to Jackie Chan?" LOL...I've learned to not take them seriously and walk away laughing at how sadly ignorant they are. The key to living life well is not letting them bother you. It's the sweetest revenge.

well, to be honest i sometimes stereotype americans. my stereotype for them is that they're always stereotyping other people. yeah, it's bad, i know, but i can't help it. it's just because i always hear about canadians who talk to americans and just get "do you have a pet penguin? do you have a pet beaver? are you an eskimo? do you live in an igloo?" that kinda stuff.. so that's how i begn to view all americans, because of the few ignorant people. i also think that they will be kinda rude.
my friend once went on a message board that was mostly americans and got asked "wow, you're from canada? do you live in an igloo?"

It's annoying traveling to other countries (especially in Europe) and having everybody hate me just because I'm an American : / When I went to France and Ireland we got refused service by some restaurants and were just treated badly in general.

^Yeah, here in Norway there actually are several people who hates everything that has anything to do with America >:c That's so extremely... Stupid! Just becouse they hate Bush and he's American, they're like: "All Americans love Bush and are just like him!"
Ew. Stupid. ;_;
And actually, a boy in my class who really is a racist, seriously, (hand his 'black' himself, and no-one bothers him for that...) says to a half Korean girl in my class: "Ching, chong! Hahahah" And to an other girl in my class he says that she could start a kebab shop.... ARGH. And his two favorite things to call people is 'gay' and 'emo'. That itself tells alot. Weelll, he actually sometimes say that i'm a nazist becouse I'm part German >:c Argghhh.... He sure is the stupidest and most tragic person ever.
blah.
Pffth. -_-

You shouldn't worry too much about that kid. He won't get far with that kind of attitude.

How is the "non japanese people calling themselves gaijin" offensive?? I can understand it being annoying/stupid, but I dont know how it could seriously hurt anyone's feelings...
I hate when people online act like Japan/asian people are automatically superior at everything. ((this isnt targeted towards anyone on here btw!)) I'm involved in a lot of Japanese fashion communities so I hear that sorta thing a lot. And it usually comes from non asian/non japanese people, haha. Its like reverse racism or something..

I'm sorry you had that experience ;_; Not all of us (and I like to think not most of us..) feel that way! I've been to Mexico and was treated very nicely by the people there; I wish Americans would be more hospitable towards foreigners like you guys were to me.. Although, I guess it depends where you go/who you meet!

Hm I've never heard of any stereotypes about Canadians...
Well I've gotten "ching chong", "Do you eat dog?", "How can you see?", "You must be really smart because you're Asian" and "Can you do kung fu?".
Whenever I go to stores I notice the person serving me getting a bit weird.
I usually just ignore them or give them an evil look. I don't see any point in trying to educate an ignorant person, most ignorant people are so incredibly stubborn.
I don't get how Asians get "ching chong" but no other ethnicity gets any crap for their language. I can understand the dog thing but how is that any different to keeping cows, pigs and sheep just to kill and eat them? I hardly even eat meat at all, mostly just seafood like canned tuna, squid and sheellfish and chicken. Meat is all the same to me, the only difference is the taste. The eye thing is just so annoying. I don't look like a person squinting and my eyes aren't even that small, so what the hell?

A lot of people don't really know the meaning of orgin of the word.. it is like this..
Gaijin is short for gaikokujin and so a lot of people think it is just slang, right? Not exactly.
Gai means outside and jin means person. So it means outside person just like gaikokujin (person from outside contry)
What i'm trying to say it, what makes my country so special that everyone else is an outsider? Because of that people treat "gaikokujin" as an outsider *not all but..* I remember when I met a japanese person who was studying abroad in America and he kept calling everyone gaijin! I was like 'excuse me, but aren't WE foreigners here??' he didn't seem to understand. It made me mad...
I agree! I used to go to a japanese music forum and after a week I was so disgusted with people's behavior. Nobody is perfect, exspecially race! I am no better then anymore. It is almost the same mentality as my friends in Japan because of eye shape? @_@ *sigh*..

well... i have. your canadian stereotype should go along these lines: we live in igloos. we go ice fishing every day. we all play hockey AS PROS. EVERYONE. we all own pet beaver, pet mooses or pet penguins (WTF PENGINS ARE FROM ANTARCTICA BTW.) eh, there's more to it.... this should probably give you an idea: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-6tzTUewXM

I'm surprised, I never heard any americans talk about Canada, but after watching that. I do know the Z/Zed thing. I remember taking 1 year of French and learning the Alphabet and hearing that America is the only country that pronounces Z like Zee *does that make sense*?

Mention that you're Australian, and you get all sorts of stupid questions.
"You have koalas and kangaroos in your back yard?"
"Do people ever ride in kangaroo's pouches?"
"Do dingo's really eat babies?"
"LOL G'DAY MATE!!!!"
It's kinda funny though, because I actually do live a fair way out of town... so we do sometimes see kangaroos and wallabies eating the grass from our 'back yard'. Our house backs out into bush though, so that's not really strange.
So yeah, when people ask if I have kangaroos in my back yard, I say yes ;D ha ha. This is totally not a normal thing though.

I get the odd "place is covered in ice and polar bears" about Sweden, but I'm not very bothered. It is sort of odd to hear it from people who live relatively close, in France or such, but hey, what can you do!
I do get a lot of unwanted attention whenever I go abroad (and not to the neighbouring countries, obviously ) but that's probably down to being like a head taller than the average person and light blonde. Gentle Giant you know

hahaha I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN! Like...people hatin on their OWN ethnicities and making all things asian sound so superior....
It's so weird...LOL and I don't mean to say that one race is more superior than another or whatever, and you can definitely have pride in your own country...but you shouldn't play down your own/other countries JUST cuz you have some huge interest/obsession with somewhere else.
people are strange sometimes =X

haha, no, I myself don't care too much about what he says to me. But when he does that to others who actually... Well... Doesn't have it easy and get really hurt by that stuff. To a girl in my class who i feel very sorry for (she hasn't really got any true friends, and is depressed... And she seems to have a lot of problems at home too...) he says different ways to do suicide very aloud. He actually encourage her to take her own life >:O I can't belive it.
;_; Poor girl. I really wanted to kick him *u know where* as hard as I could right then. Buh.
Sorry for my little *going mad* post...
