Default In Your Opinion...

Do you think it is important to study abroad in order to fully appreciate another culture? I'm just interested in everyone's ideas.

I personally think it is very important.
I lived in Japan for three years, and I had a totally different idea of what it was going to be like there than it actually was.
Unfortunately, my old fashioned parents could not get past old stereotypes, but thanks to living there I was able to embrace the culture and realize just how much Japanese and Americans are simlilar and alike at the same time.

What is your opinion on the importance of studying abroad?

I think its important to experience other cultures and enhance people education and other cultures and traditions. Studying abroad is a great way as you are fully engrossed in the culture esp if ur learning their language. however you dont have to study abroad to appreciate ut u can go travelling, visiting, sight see and try and visit places which are less touristy and more authentic etc

me personally i would love to study abroad and hopefully after i graduate in the summer i be going to china to learn mandarin

It is definately the best way to experience that culture! I mean, you hear about some places but when you actually go there, most the time its completely different to what you expected! Normally its better You also get to meet heaps of new people and get to know the locals and not just the touristy area people........plus, you'll learn the language better when you're surrounded by it 24/7

Definitely important!! You can't truly understand the culture just from what you read in books or the internet, or even what people tell you. You have to visit the origin of the culture and take it in for yourself.
To learn the language there would be most beneficial too since you'll be learning pretty much the way everyone is talking now, you know? In books or classes, they may only teach you the formal ways of saying things, which is good, but I'm sure you'd feel much more comfortable being able to easily converse with anyone.

On a sort of random note: When I was in Japanese school, my substitute teacher was Mr. One-Bear, (he was Native American) but spoke fluent Japanese cause he studied abroad. In his classes, they weren't aloud to speak a WORD of English!! But that's what allowed him to become fluent in the language. In America for example, they'd be a lot more lenient, which doesn't give you as much of a chance to practice Japanese since your comfort zone is with speaking your own native language. So studying abroad is extremely important, especially if you want to learn the language.

I think it's really important because it will broaden your world view and will help you understand why a culture is the way they are. (^_^)v
