School Uniform Debates
For school I have to do a debate on school uniforms. My teammate and I are on the affirmative so we are for uniforms. Could you guys help me find some pros to them? And possibly some questions to ask the Negative team?

Re: School Uniform Debates
some pros would be that you don't have to have your clothes already picked out for the day. you just have to have your uniform ready.
umm i can't think of a question to ask the nagative team

Re: School Uniform Debates
The usual argument goes like:
It provides an enviroment of equality - rich kids don't dress up nice, and poor kids bad, so therefore, since everyone dresses the same, the poor kids don't suffer discrimination for it, and it also helps them blend in.
Another argument is that it makes students instantly recognisable on the street, so they are less likely to do illegal things - smoke, go to bars, when they can be easily picked out and their school identified.
Another argument could be that it provides team spirit - kids identify with their uniform, their school colours, emblem, motto, song etc, and it builds an unifying front for everyone to relate to despite people coming from different backgrounds.
An argument of the opposing team will be freedom of expression, and they'll accuse proponents of stiflying natural creativity by forcing kids to wear uniforms. A counterargument is that creativity is channeled through all sorts of ways, and in the context of school, order is much more important from the point of view of one's clothes. Creativity cannot be stifled because it is encouraged in children's minds, in their points of view, and in their manner of dealing with problems.
Hope my rambling helps

Re: School Uniform Debates
I went to a catholic school and everyone thought it was cheaper to just have a couple outfits to wear than buy a whole wardrobe (except our clothes were super expensive and i could have bought a whole wardrobe for the two shirts and pants i got hahaha). So I guess use that. Because then apparently people who are poor don't get made fun of for wearing the same clothes every day blahblahblah ... obviously I think uniforms are ridiculous. haha

Re: School Uniform Debates
I think suzushii said just about everything :3
If I was talking to the person choosing the uniforms though.. i would ask that they not be TOO simple with ugly colors, like a white collard t-shirt(ugly material too!) and NAVYblue bottoms.. i absolutely hated those uniforms (thats what i had in elementary and junior high). I honestly couldn't find anything in the stores that made me look good, so i always felt so ugly in my uniform compared to all the prettier girls that somehow looked decent in their's. I know that has nothing to do with the debate and wouldn't be a good point to bring in, just really wanted to add that.
even black and white colors would be better than navy blue.. its just torture and not even the "poor" kids liked it.

Re: School Uniform Debates
From a psychological point of view, some people say that having a uniform puts you into the frame of mind to work, and then when you take it off you're more in the frame of mind to relax

Re: School Uniform Debates
first of all, many people who are against the uniform policy say they are because it takes away their individuality. from the 'individuality' I'm observing in schools...well, it isn't at all diverse. everyone dresses almost alike anyway, has no creativity, always in little cliques...etc. so minus well just inform a uniform policy.
and hey, that means less work for me! xD I don't have to be so self-conscious on how I look if all I need to put on in the morning is my school uniform. plus I don't have to go and buy so many clothes 'just because'. errgh. I'm poor, dangit! T.T

Re: School Uniform Debates
Well...my debate went terribly...I was already feeling sick in the morning and in the middle of my debate as in litterally the middle of my speech, I had to ask to leave the room because I was nearly sick... It was so embarrassing... As I ran down the hallway I heard my class laughing

Re: School Uniform Debates
A similar thing happened to me. It was so embarassing that i didn't go back, i just called my boyfriend to come pick me up after calling my mom asking if it was okay.
It was in the middle of piano class, my first class on my FIRST day of school last year. The teacher was talking to the whole class and i KNEW i would be sick but i was trying to surpress throwing up, thinking it would work. But then I felt it coming, and there was no surpressing it. I ran out of the classroom when my teacher was still talking and as soon as i got out the door, i threw up, thankfully there was a garbage can like right there, so i threw up in that. x.x
Then i threw up once more like 5 min later. My bf picked me up, and i threw up in his car. That was the worst day. XP
There was one time that i threw up in my english class too, in the sink. Everyone was disgusted. That was pretty horrible too, thankfully i hardly ever went to that class. I never showed up on time for it.

O____O
I<3my uniform! ^^
Hehe. My school is trying to make stricter rules regarding the uniforms for those who are in Grade 9-11. (grey pants& sweater)
Since I'm in Grade 12, they're not that strict on uniform. (grey/navy pants and sweater, &white polo)
I won't have to get up early in the morning just to choose what outfit I'm going to wear.

oh yeah.
see, also the thing about school uniforms, well at least here in the U.S., is that they make it boring. the school uniform codes for my county's school district is navy blue shirt and khaki pants. booooring. jeez at least supply us some of those cute Japanese school uniforms, lol

Re: School Uniform Debates
I hated my school uniform when I had one.
It was ugly and I found that half the crap people say about it being a good idea was a lie.
People are still in their cliques and they'll judge anything else they can.
I was shunned by the ENTIRE shcool because my hair was "short" when I was a girl. I was bullied and harrassed because of THAT.
I'd rather be bullied from the way I dress than my HAIR.
I was also constantly losing my uniform peices in the morning.
